Brain and Spine Surgeons


Dr. Degen is a board-certified Neurosurgeon who joined Hudson Valley Brain and Spine Surgery in 2005.  He practices at Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern, Nyack Hospital, Orange Regional Medical Center, St. Luke’s-Cornwall Hospital, and at Ambulatory Surgery Centers in Mahwah, NJ and Cornwall, NY.  He is also a Clinical Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at New York Medical College/Westchester Medical Center.  He holds active medical licenses in New York and New Jersey.

Dr. Degen is originally from Queens, NY and attended the Bronx High School of Science.  He then earned his undergraduate degree from Princeton University, magna cum laude, and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He next attended Cornell University Medical College where he was elected to the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.  Upon graduation, Dr. Degen undertook a surgical internship and completed his residency in Neurosurgery at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, D.C.  He is a diplomate of the American Board of Neurological Surgery and a member of several specialty societies including the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, and the North American Spine Society.

Since joining the practice, Dr. Degen has earned a reputation as a skilled surgeon who provides outstanding care to his patients.  While he performs a wide variety of Neurosurgical procedures, his particular interests include minimally invasive spine surgery, neuroendoscopy, and tumors of the brain and spine.  He serves as the Chief of the Division of Neurosurgery at St. Luke’s-Cornwall Hospital.

When not at work, Dr. Degen enjoys spending time with his wife and two young sons, cooking, and competing in triathlons.
